Project DoD is a nonprofit collective organized to research and develop
tools, technologies, and infrastructure that promote community,
solidarity, and autonomy. Our hopes are that through such research and
development these tools, technologies, and infrastructure, will encourage
and empower members of the general public to learn, participate, and
educate the world around them. Project DoD is not centrally owned and
does not consist of a select few coordinating members, rather anyone who
becomes a member and wishes to participate in the membership committee
will have equal say, and equal vote in the decisions that effect our
projects and goals. If you simply wish to suggest a project for DoD,
then you should join the collective mailing list on the about page and
post your proposal there. Project DoD started as a hosting collective
for the underground music scene providing a digital outlet for a variety
of artists. We would like to thank the underground community for their
support and help in shaping Project DoD into what we are today.

- DMCA Abuse Challenge Rejected in Maine
Fri, 01 Jan 2010 06:02:17 +0000 Hosting ProjectImagine living in a world where the critics of a medical practice are silenced when speaking out about its scientific merit and potential risks. As it turns out, there is no need to imagine this world, because you’re living in it. The scientific process is what gives western medicine the ability to progress, adapt, and [...] - Project DoD has Achieved Its Financial Goals for 2009
Sat, 12 Dec 2009 19:26:33 +0000 Project DoDThat’s right, Project DoD Inc. has achieved its financial goals for 2009. We would like to thank everyone who generously donated, even in this tough economy. Rest assured that your donations are being put to good use. Not only have we completed our 12th year of service to the community, but we [...] - Updated dod.net Wildcard Certs
Wed, 07 Oct 2009 08:51:46 +0000 Project DoDWe just updated the dod.net wildcard certs for subdomains (e.g. foobar.dod.net), IRC, account manager, and the rest of our web content. It costs us $600.00 a year, so please enjoy your collective SSL.
- DMCA Abuse and the Changing Service Landscape
Sun, 23 Aug 2009 03:31:29 +0000 Hosting ProjectIt’s getting bad out there. Over the last year many of Project DoD’s new users have been refugees from hosting providers that caved to DMCA takedown notices. These people are not given the chance to respond with a counter notice — a provision of the DMCA that let’s one challenge the claim — and with [...] - Hosting Project Expenses Raised
Sat, 11 Jul 2009 22:38:23 +0000 Email ProjectHosting ProjectIRC ProjectProject DoD’s old hosting contract has expired and our hosting expenses have just gone up. We used to pay:
$50.00 a month per U
$40.00 a month per 1Mbit
and now, starting August, we’ll be paying:
$75.00 a month per U
$50.00 a month per 1Mbit
With a 2U server and 2Mbit usage, our monthly hosting expenses will go from [...] - New IRC Server
Thu, 02 Jul 2009 05:58:58 +0000 IRC ProjectWe wanted to thank Shawn Boyle for setting up irc.dod.net and our chat page. For a while now Shawn has been managing the Project DoD ventrilo server, and when we started talking about running a FreeNode IRC server, he stepped right up. When we never heard back from the FreeNode folks Shawn setup [...] - Project DoD Needs New Hardware
Sat, 27 Jun 2009 22:16:13 +0000 Project DoDIt’s time for new hardware. Once again we have pushed our current hardware well beyond its warranty or any reasonable meantime to failure. We are out of memory constantly, we are out of CPU frequently, and we are seeing I/O storms that bring the box to its knees. If none of this [...] - Nagios Monitoring
Fri, 19 Jun 2009 03:32:42 +0000 Email ProjectHosting ProjectWe wanted to extend a thank you to Dave Rawks for helping us with our Nagios monitoring. Nagios is an highly configurable enterprise-class monitoring service that puts our old Perl scripts to shame. Nevertheless, it’s non-trivial to configure, and even the documentation warns that Nagios is not for the weak at heart. [...] - rsync Binaries Installed
Fri, 19 Jun 2009 03:27:27 +0000 Hosting ProjectUpon request we’ve installed the rsync binaries on Project DoD’s servers. We are not, however, running an rsync daemon.
- Donations Update
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 02:31:58 +0000 Project DoDWe’ve been working very hard at finishing our donation system so that it does everything we ever wanted it to. There has been lots of behind-the-scenes work on restructuring our user databases so that the idea of a “doduser” is separate from a “user”. The former being a login account that allows people [...] |
